If you have been trying to get pregnant, and have decided to try in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, you already have a lot on your mind. One of the many decisions you will face is which clinic to go to. There are many factors affection this decision, such as cost, convenience, and the clinic's success rates with previous IVF patients.
For many, success rates are a particularly compelling factor when choosing an IVF clinic. After all, the last thing a patient wants is another unsuccessful attempt at pregnancy. However, a clinic's success rates can sometimes be misleading.
Because a previous record of success is such a key selling point for a fertility clinic, it is in the clinic's best interest to keep these numbers high. Unfortunately, it is not really possible to guarantee a high chance at a successful treatment to every IVF patient. To maintain high success rates, many clinics will reject patients considered unlikely to have a successful treatment, such as older patients. Some clinics will even cancel a treatment that has already been paid for if the early stages suggest that there is a high chance of failure. The patients are not refunded, and not even given the chance to conceive the child they are longing for; they are treated simply as a statistic that must be prevented from damaging the clinic's reputation.
Not every IVF clinic is more concerned with appearances and the bottom line than with helping patients, but unfortunately, many are. When searching for a fertility clinic, ask about their cancellation or rejection policies, and do not make a payment or commitment until you have read the fine print. You may find that a clinic with less high success rates will end up being a better choice, as they may be more willing to treat anyone who needs their help.
